"Julius Voegtli: A Swiss Impressionist Pioneer"

JULIUS VOEGTLI ECHOES ACROSS CONTINENTS

presenting the works of the Swiss artist Julius Voegtli
(* 1879 – † 1944).
Vernissage: 22 September 2023, 10 AM
Duration: 22 September 2023 – 22 November 2023

Foreword

We are delighted to present this catalogue for the upcoming solo exhibition of Julius Voegtli’s artworks at the Hainan Danjia Museum. This exhibition marks a momentous occasion in the art world—a rediscovery of an artist whose contribution to Impressionism deserves a place alongside the greats of the movement. Julius Voegtli’s journey, rooted in the German-speaking regions, adds a unique perspective to the broader Impressionist narrative.
In the words of Julius Voegtli himself, “When a new direction in art appears, it always seems strange at first.” Indeed, Impressionism, with its focus on capturing fleeting moments and the interplay of light, was met with skepticism and derision when it first emerged in 1874. However, as history has shown, what is initially considered unconventional often becomes timeless and beloved.

The Legacy of Julius Voegtli

Julius Voegtli’s artistic legacy encompasses a wide range of subjects, including landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and frescoes. His mastery of various mediums, from aquarelle to oil, charcoal, and ink painting, demonstrates his multifaceted talent.
Impressionism, as an artistic genre, transcends time and boundaries. Voegtli’s unique perspective within this movement offers contemporary audiences an exciting opportunity to explore the work of a lesser-known Impressionist artist. His pieces, some dating back 130 years, continue to captivate viewers with their enduring charm.

The Exhibition

The solo exhibition at the Hainan Danjia Museum promises to be a visual journey through the world of Julius Voegtli. His contemplative portraits, sweeping Swiss landscapes, and classic Impressionist still lifes will come to life, shedding light on the artist’s ability to capture the essence of a moment with his brushstrokes.
As you explore the exhibition, we invite you to immerse yourself in the mood of these unique paintings. Let the interplay of light and color transport you to another time and place, where the world is seen through the eyes of an Impressionist pioneer.

Julius Voegtli: An Impressionist Pioneer

Julius Voegtli’s artistic journey began in 1902 when he embarked on his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. During this period, Impressionism was making its way beyond the borders of France. While Cezanne, Monet, Degas, Renoir, and Pissaro were creating their masterpieces in France, Voegtli was inspired by this new movement and developed his work in the Impressionist direction.
The German-speaking regions were gradually embracing Impressionism, and Voegtli was at the forefront of this movement. His works from 1902 to 1920, and beyond, reflect the influence of the Impressionist painters. A significant milestone in his career was his friendship with renowned artist Ferdinand Hodler, leading to their joint exhibition in Biel in 1910.

Rediscovering Voegtli

For many years, Julius Voegtli’s work remained in relative obscurity. The tumultuous period of two world wars and societal upheaval shifted the world’s focus away from the art world. Galleries and institutions struggled to promote emerging artists, and many significant works went unnoticed.
The rediscovery of Voegtli’s oeuvre was initiated by Hans Vögtli, the artist’s grandson. Starting in 1974, he began actively collecting his grandfather’s works, scouring newspapers and auction houses for traces of his art. As art magazines and publications started featuring Voegtli’s approach, interest in his work grew. The partnership with Pashmin Art Consortia played a pivotal role in introducing his art to a global audience.

Conclusion

In bringing Julius Voegtli’s art to the Hainan Danjia Museum, Pashmin Art Consortia continues its tradition of fostering cross-cultural artistic exchange and celebrating artists who have, for too long, been overlooked. We hope this exhibition will serve as a testament to the enduring power of art and the importance of recognizing and preserving the contributions of artists like Julius Voegtli.
As you peruse this catalogue and experience the exhibition, we invite you to step into the world of Julius Voegtli, an Impressionist pioneer whose work is a timeless testament to the beauty of capturing fleeting moments in vibrant color and light.
